Mornington Peninsula Shire is amending its Governance Rules.

You were invited to have your say on the proposed amendments to the Governance Rules from Monday 24 May to Friday 18 June 2021.

Council sought your input on the proposed amendments. In particular, changes of note are the:

  • Ability of Councillors to attend the Meeting by teleconference
  • Chairperson’s powers
  • Chief Executive Officer powers
  • Ability of Councillors to seek leave to introduce further amendments
  • Notices of Motion
  • Inclusion of the Election Period Policy
  • Removal of the Prayer from the Council Agenda.

In particular, Council seeks your input in relation to the Prayer.

On 9 February 2021, Council resolved to engage with the community on the wording of the prayer adopted by Council on 8 December 2020. At that meeting, Council adopted the following wording:

‘We pledge that this Council will act in the best interests of the entire Mornington
Peninsula community. We will conduct our deliberations and make decisions with an
open mind and on each item’s individual merit. We further commit to carry out our
duties impartially and in good faith, treating each other with respect, dignity and
kindness, and at all times, acting in accordance with the Councillor Code of Conduct
and Governance Rules’.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is committed to working with the community to improve public confidence in the decisions it makes and to ensure decisions reflect the best interests of all sections of our community. Council is seeking your feedback on the above amendments and on its Governance Rules in general.
