The Sorrento Ferry Terminal links our Peninsula to the Surf Coast and Bellarine region. It was welcomed as a first step in realising the potential of this important transport and tourism link.

The ferry is one of the busiest services of its kind in Australia, carrying more than 950,000 people and 26,000 vehicles every year.

The upgrade of the Sorrento precinct will complement the work happening in Queenscliff. The upgrades will support the economy, local communities and will improve the Sorrento foreshore.

State Government has funded Searoad Ferries $2.5 million to complete the ferry terminal upgrades and the Shire has been funded $2.5 million for essential road improvement works.

The Shire’s involvement in this project includes:

  • The planning of Sorrento’s new coastal precinct - Sorrento Masterplan.
  • The completed Planning Scheme Amendment C209 for the redevelopment of the Sorrento Ferry Terminal to include a new terminal building
  • 40km/h speed zone on Ocean Beach Road and surrounding areas.
  • Construction of a roundabout at Point Nepean Road/Hotham Road in Sorrento
  • Upgrades to Hotham Road between The Esplanade and Point Nepean Road.

This project will create a gateway to the Sorrento Ferry Terminal and the main shopping precinct. It will link the town centre to the coastline with safe and easy access for residents and visitors.

We are working with Searoad Ferries, the Department of Transport (VicRoads), and the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions to deliver the project. This will see improved traffic safety and necessary road upgrades in the vicinity of the ferry terminal.

The State Government has provided $2.5 million to the Shire for this project.

This fully-funded project aims to improve the roads close to the Sorrento ferry terminal.

The proposed works include:

  • 40km/h speed zone on Ocean Beach Road and surrounding areas.
  • Construction of a roundabout at Point Nepean Road/Hotham Road in Sorrento
  • Upgrades to Hotham Road between The Esplanade and Point Nepean Road

Important dates and information

  • The speed zone changes to 40km/h are proposed to start in August 2021.
  • We are currently in the design stage for the road upgrades and will update the details of this project before building works start in autumn 2022
