Central Port Phillip

From Safety Beach and Tootgarook, this region holds calm and shallow waters facing into Port Phillip Bay, making it a popular holiday destination. Sandy beaches and dune systems lead into coastal reserves, home to a number of important coastal flora and fauna. Many of these species hold conservation and biodiversity significance, such as the now rare sections of coast banksia woodland and red-capped plovers who nest amongst the dunes.

The picturesque beaches draw in residents and visitors alike for swimming, water sports and boating. The foreshores are prime locations for picnicking, cycling, camping, and fishing from the area’s numerous piers and jetties, including Rosebud pier.

Cliff instability, sand movement and loss and flooding in lower-lying coastal areas present both current and future challenges. These processes threaten core values, uses and infrastructure of those communities along the coast.
