Extending from the west of Western Port Bay's entrance, around to Somers, this diverse region of coast is home to a number of peaceful coastal villages. Scenic bays, seagrass meadows and rocky reefs provide sheltered habitat for unique marine life, such as the weedy sea dragon. Abundant biodiversity draws visitors to snorkel and dive and offers commercial and recreational fishing opportunities. Significant intact coastal bush, such as the banksia woodland, is present at both Balnarring and Merricks Beach.
Foreshore camping in many of the townships is a drawcard for visitors, including Point Leo, which is also known for being some of the closest available surfing to Melbourne. The area has numerous piers and jetties, including historic and iconic Flinders Pier, along with various launching facilities to access Western Port and beyond.
From cliff erosion, sand movement and loss and flooding in lower-lying coastal areas, sections of this coastline already experience coastal hazards. High, steeper terrains in some areas limit flooding risk, but pose complex erosion challenges.
